The Native Women's Collective has received $5000 from the Seventh Generation Fund for the "Woven with Our Roots" Project - a basket weaving retreat!

Along with master artist Kateri Masten, the Native Women's Collective will plan a week long basket weaving retreat for women interested in learning the fine art of traditional basket making. The retreat will be planned for late Summer or early Fall 2012. Please check back often as we update with more information.

Flower Dance Demonstration(s): HSU Big Time & DQ University Pow Wow

The Native Women's Collective (with the help of various community members) recently lead two Flower Dance Demonstrations to help showcase the revitalization of this women's coming of age ceremony. The demonstrations continue to be a testament to the resurgence of this important community building ceremonial activity. For a number of years this ceremony was not commonly performed but because of the hard work of people throughout the region the dance is now regularly given to celebrate as a girl becomes a woman. One participant was Vanessa Esquivido who said "I am honored to stand and sing next to such strong, beautiful and intelligent women! The continuing revitalization of our culture is important to our communities and our spirituality." Read the FULL STORY here.

Bear Grass Braiding Workshop: (Davis, CA)

The Native Women's Collective in partnership with the Me'Dil Institute sponsored a Bear Grass Braiding Cirlce in Davis, CA. The circle brought together women to learn to weave bear grass braids. The women met once a week in this community gathering to learn, laugh and weave together. The circle continues again beginning April 22. Learn more and see pics on the PROJECTS page.
