The Native Women's Collective has received $10,000 from Cal Humanities: Community Stories Project for the Northwest Coast (NWC) Regalia Stories Project!
The “NWC Regalia Stories” explores the life stories of cultural regalia pieces for Northwest California Native peoples. This digital humanities project also examines the effects of history and change for Native regalia pieces through the last century. The personal perspectives and experiences of living regalia makers reveal the meanings embedded in the regalia. The traditions that will be represented through the collected stories and mixed-media illustrate the remarkable continuance of these cultures. This project will engage the Native community in the interpretation and documentation of their own histories and cultures. It will collect stories that may otherwise be lost as many of the elder participants are in their mid-80’s and have not had the opportunity to share these stories. This project will focus on enhancing the public’s understanding of contemporary Native peoples in California through an exploration of the cultures, peoples and histories that helped to build and rebuild the state from time immemorial. The project will result in a collected archive, exhibition, and interactive website with documentary film shorts and photo essays of regalia stories by a cross spectrum of generations including tribal elders and youth who have utilized these regalia pieces as part of a vibrant and continuing culture.
